“Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” ~ James 3:5-6
Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “Think before you speak.” That’s very good advice. That’s because the tongue has the ability to burn your whole life down. You can literally destroy relationships with wrong words. Wars are sometimes started by wrong words.
One wrong misplaced match can burn a whole forest down. Wrong misplaced words can burn your whole life down. Playing with matches around gasoline is a bad idea. Speaking wrong words is a worse idea; it can literally destroy everything around you.
Proverbs 18:21 tells us that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” So the next time you’re about ready to give someone a piece of your mind, you might want to think before you speak. You might just burn everything around you down. Don’t be a spiritual arsonist!
